Prep Orientation Ideas: 4 Expert Tips for a Stress-Free Transition Session

Whether you call it Kindy Transition, Foundation Orientation, or “The Big School Visit,” we all know the goal is the same: helping our newest little learners feel brave, excited, and welcome. After several years of navigating these sessions, I’ve learned that the secret to a successful day isn’t fancy decor – it’s about connection and calm. If you are feeling those “orientation jitters,” don’t worry! I’ve got you covered. Here are my top four tips for a super smooth Prep Orientation session that will leave both you and your students smiling.

1. The Power of the Name Tag

Let’s be real, walking into a room where no one knows your name is intimidating for an adult, let alone a four-year-old! Having name tags ready to go is my number one sanity-saver.

I love using simple sticker name tags. Not only does it help me greet every child personally as they walk through the door, but it also helps the children start to recognise their own name in print. I have them all laid out on a table, and the children have to find their own name. Of course, parents can help if needed!

Pro Tip: Use a clear, easy-to-read font (like your state’s specific school font) so they are seeing the correct letter formations from day one.

2. Keep Hands Busy with Simple Crafts

When it comes to Prep Orientation activities, simple is always better. You want something that lets the children feel successful without constant teacher intervention (because you’ll be busy chatting with parents and wiping the occasional tear!).

I usually set up a few “low-pressure” stations:

• Playdough
• Scissor Skills
• Colouring
• Beading
• Construction play or Lego
• Animals or pretend play

I find it really helpful to have these set up so parents can settle their child into an activity and be able to leave knowing that their little one is engaged and happy.

3. A Sweet Story to Start

There is nothing like a good picture book to settle a room. During Prep Orientation, I always have a “First Day” themed book ready on the carpet. After we have spent some time at the tables doing some activities and the children are feeling settled, we gather on the mat for a story!

Wombat Goes to School by Jackie French and Bruce Whatley is a personal favourite! It’s relatable, funny, and perfect for sparking a little conversation about what they think school will be like. Reading together creates an immediate sense of community and gives the children a focal point while they get used to their new surroundings.

Another favourite is Charlie and Lola – I Am Too Absolutely Small For School by Lauren Child! It’s a great way to open a discussion about how they feel about starting school!

I also personally love sharing Feathers for Phoebe by Rod Clement. Even though it doesn’t have a specific school-starting theme, its message about being special and unique in our own way is so powerful. I love sharing this with students who are just beginning their school journey; it’s a gentle reminder that they all bring their own unique ideas, perspectives, and talents to our classroom family.

4. Create a “Starting School” Keepsake

I love giving my students a way to document their very first visit. This is where my “I am starting school” activity comes in!

It is a simple, one-page download that allows students to draw a self-portrait and practice writing their names. It’s a wonderful “baseline” for you to see where their fine motor skills are, and it makes the cutest classroom display for the start of the year or a little keepsake for children to take home and share with their families!
