The Star Jar is one of those positive behaviour management strategies that is so simple, yet so effective for the primary years. Here is the lowdown:
- Set the Goal: Decide on a specific behaviour you want to see. Maybe it’s “quiet transitions,” “lining up safely,” or “showing kindness in the playground.”
- Catch Them Being Good: When the class nails it, drop a star in the jar! The visual and auditory “clink” of the star hitting the bottom is instant reinforcement.
- The Big Reveal: Once the jar is full, the class earns their reward.
Fun and Low-Cost Whole-Class Reward System Ideas
You don’t need to buy plastic trinkets to make this work. Some of the best whole-class reward system ideas are completely free and focus on experiences rather than “stuff.” Here are a few that my students consistently vote for:
- A Bluey Episode: There is nothing like the pure joy of a 7-minute Bluey break. It’s short, sweet, and the kids absolutely lose their minds for it.
- Sheet Forts in the Classroom: Have everyone bring in a flat sheet and spend the afternoon reading or working under desks in their forts. It turns a normal Wednesday into a core memory!
- A Disco Party: Close the blinds, put on a kid-friendly playlist, and let them dance it out for 15 minutes.
- Shoes Off Afternoon: This is a classic for a reason. Letting them walk around in their socks feels like the ultimate luxury to a six-year-old.
- Stuffed Animal Day: Everyone gets to bring a “learning buddy” from home to sit on their desk for the day.
Consistency is Key
