Fun and Engaging Kindergarten Shape Activities
If you are looking for fresh, hands-on kindergarten shape activities, you are in the right place! In the early years, learning about geometry is so much more than just naming a flat drawing on a page. It’s about building, exploring, and identifying the world around us.
Whether we are creating intricate designs with blocks, heading outside on a mission to find geometry in the wild, or connecting shapes to everyday objects, I love making this unit as interactive as possible. These activities are specifically designed to align with the Australian Curriculum (Foundation Level Maths), with a focus on identifying, naming, and describing common 2D shapes (AC9MFP01).
1. Shape Picture Creations
This open-ended activity is such a fantastic way to encourage both geometry skills and oral language in your classroom. Start by providing your students with a set of shape pattern blocks and invite them to use the blocks to create their own unique design or picture. They always come up with such creative ideas, from houses and robots to colourful flowers! Once their masterpiece is finished, take a photo to create a wonderful “literacy link” where students can label the shapes they used or even use the image as a story starter for some creative writing. For a fun teacher tip, try placing those photos back out in your math centres as task cards; students will love choosing a friend’s picture and trying to recreate the design, which is a brilliant way to build their spatial awareness. This is one of my favouirte Kindergarten shape activities to introduce 2D shapes!
2. Become a Shape Detective
There is nothing more exciting for a Foundation/Prep/Kindergarten student than a mission! We go on a “Shape Walk” around the school to find real-life examples of circles, squares, and triangles.

3. Hands-On Shape Mats (Free Download!)
Connecting abstract shapes to familiar objects is key for our little learners. My Shape Mats help students explore different 2D shapes, from common ones like circles and squares to more complex ones like trapeziums and hexagons, and find them in everyday items.
