Why You Need This Kindergarten Number Book in Your Life
We all know that building strong number sense in the early years is one of the most important things we can do for our students. But finding resources that cover all the key skills without taking hours to prepare can feel impossible. That’s exactly why I made this!
Here’s what this kindergarten number book takes care of for you:
- Number Formation: Students trace and write each number independently, building the muscle memory for correct number formation from the very start.
- Counting and Subitising: The “Show it!” and “Colour the bears!” activities ask students to represent each number, connecting the numeral to a quantity in a hands-on way.
- Number Recognition: The “Find and Colour!” activity on each page is such a student favourite — students hunt for the target number hidden among a mix of others, building strong visual discrimination skills.
- Fine Motor Development: All that tracing, colouring, and careful pencil work gives little hands a fantastic fine motor workout at the same time!

I wanted to make sure this resource gave students a really solid, multi-layered experience of each number — not just tracing it once and moving on. Here’s exactly what you’ll find for every number from 1 to 20:
- Page 1 — Trace and Write: Students trace the number in dotted format across the full page, building automaticity and correct formation habits. There’s also a fun picture to colour to keep things engaging!
- Page 2 — Show It! and Find and Colour: This is where the real number sense magic happens. Students use the “Show it!” box to represent the number (think ten frames, drawing objects, or tallies), then hunt through a grid of numbers to find and colour all the matching ones. It’s a favourite in my classroom every single time!
The book covers numbers 1 through 20, making it the perfect companion for your entire school year — from those very first weeks learning to write 1, 2, and 3, all the way through to the teen numbers that always need a little extra practice!
How to Use It in Your Kindergarten Classroom
Because this resource is truly no-prep, you can grab it and go. Here are a few of my favourite ways to use it:
- Morning Work: Slip a page into your students’ morning work routine for a calm, independent start to the day. Predictable tasks like these are gold in Kindergarten.
- Maths Centres: Use individual pages during your small-group rotations or maths centres for focused, independent number practice.
- The Number Book: Bind all the pages together at the start of your number unit so each student has their very own number book to work through, take pride in, and take home at the end!
- Early Finishers: Keep a stack of pages handy for students who finish activities early — they’re self-explanatory and self-directed, which means no extra instructions needed from you.
A Note on Spelling!
