Name Playdough Mats: A Fine Motor Kindergarten Activity for Name Recognition
Are you looking for a fun name recognition activity for the first weeks of school? These name playdough mats are one of my favourite ways to combine name recognition, fine motor practice, and a bit of number sense – all in one simple mat!
Morning Playdough as Students Arrive
I introduce these mats on day one of the school year, and they become our go-to morning activity. Each student has their own personalised mat with their name and a tens frame. As students arrive, they find their mat at the playdough table and get straight into rolling, squishing, and forming their own name out of playdough – no instructions needed, which makes it such a calm, independent way to start the day.
Why It’s a Great Fine Motor Kindergarten Activity
Rolling playdough into coils and pressing it into letter shapes is fantastic for building those little finger muscles before students move into pencil work. It’s one of the simplest fine-motor kindergarten activities I use, and because it’s paired with their own names, students are motivated to keep coming back to it.
