This activity is always a winner in my classroom. Students get to decorate their names with all the colours of the rainbow while practising important early skills like glue control, hand strength, and name recognition.

Why I Love This Back-to-School Name Art Activity
I recently shared a photo on Instagram featuring one of the funniest read-alouds ever – Do Not Open This Book – and I had so many messages asking about the name art display in the background. Teacher life, right? We spot the display before the book 😅 I knew I had to share my secrets for this project and pass along the brand-new file I use in my classroom so you can recreate it easily with your own students.
What Is Confetti Name Art?
Essentially, it’s a simple, high-impact craft where students fill the outline of their names using whatever bright materials you have in your cupboards. It’s the perfect name art project for:
- Building Community: Helping every child see their name (and themselves) in their new room.
- Back to School: A low-stress way to start the year.
- Name Recognition: Helping students identify the letters in their own names.
- Fine Motor Development: Peeling, sticking, and tearing.
- Bright Classroom Displays: It looks incredible on a bulletin board!
What You’ll Need

How to Set Up Your Confetti Name Art
Here’s my no-stress teacher routine:
- Open the auto-fill PDF file (Instructions to download are below!).
- Type your class list into the boxes on the first page.
- Watch the magic happen! The names will automatically populate throughout the document.
- Print on A3 paper. While A4 works, A3 makes for a much bolder, eye-catching display.
- Use coloured card. Because let’s be honest… everything is better in rainbow 🌈.
Decorating Ideas for Your Students
In my classroom, we love using confetti, but this name art is versatile! You can use:
- Cut-up coloured or patterned paper scraps.
- Tissue paper scrunched into little balls.
- Hand-torn paper (fantastic for building those tiny hand muscles).
- Stickers or sequins.
This is also the perfect time to explicitly teach those “big kid” school skills, like:
- Cleaning up those tiny scraps afterwards!
- How to use a glue stick correctly.
- The golden rule: “Dot, dot, not a lot!”
- Staying inside the lines.
Displaying Your Finished Name Art
Once finished, pop them straight onto a bulletin board or wall display and prepare for the WOW factor.
